Translation of Humanities Terminology into Arabic: Mechanisms and Challenges

Scholars agree on the complexities and challenges of translating terms in the humanities. The difficulty arises from the fact those terms carry deep cultural and semantic layers that are embedded in the original text. Therefore, the translator must not only convey the linguistic elements of the term but also translate its significance within the broader societal context. While the concept may remain consistent across cultures, the terminology itself often varies from one society to another.

In this context, this research attempts to study the most important strategies followed in translating humanities terms into Arabic and their problems. The importance of this topic is increasing at present time in parallel with the interest that humanities and social sciences specializations have gained within academic institutions and through scientific production, publication, study, and translation. This renewed interest has been accompanied by an almost complete Arabization of teaching these specializations in many Arab universities; which has prompted students and researchers to resort to foreign languages to study the original references, or to use their translations, in which the issue of translating the term has posed a major dilemma that necessitated searching for the most important ways to overcome it.

Accordingly, this study will contribute to increasing the accumulation of knowledge aimed at raising awareness of the importance of testing terms imported into Arabic from foreign languages and cultures before accepting, adapting and generalizing them. Thus, this study attempts to answer the problem related to the effectiveness of the strategies used in translating humanities terms into Arabic and the dilemmas they face.

In connection with this central question, the research also attempts to answer the following subquestions:

– What is the relationship between translation and terminology?
– What are the most important methods for translating terms in general, and humanities terms in particular?

– How do Arab translators deal with terms of Western origin?

– What are the most important problems in translating humanities terms into Arabic? What are the proposed solutions to overcome them?

To achieve this, the research uses the analytical method, which is based on studying and analyzing the translations of a sample of humanities texts and terms into Arabic and testing the strategies used in their transfer in terms of formulation, meaning, originality, circulation and generalization
