Grammatical and Semantic System in Ibn Al-Hajib’s Thought and the Structural Basis of Syntax
This study uses a philological approach that emphasizes description, analysis, and interpretation, this study explores the semantic-syntactic framework in Ibn Al-Hajib’s Al-Idhah fi Sharh Sharh Al-Mufassal. The research identifies three analytical levels: categorical, syntactic, and semantic-syntactic.
At the categorical level, Ibn Al-Hajib classifies grammar into nouns, verbs, and particles, distinguishing them based on semantic independence. Nouns and verbs are semantically self-sufficient, while particles are not. Verbs, although indicative of action and time, depend on nouns for sentence construction, necessitating i’rab (inflection).
The syntactic level positions nouns as foundational to composition, with inflection arising naturally. Verbs inherently involve predication and govern grammatical relationships, emphasizing the role of composition in generating meaning.
Sentence construction relies on the relationship between subject and predicate at the semantic-syntactic level, necessitating nominative inflection. Other elements, derived from verbs, function as complements, requiring accusative inflection. The concept of iqtida’ (semantic dependence) highlights the mutual need between grammatical components to create meaning.
This analysis reveals Ibn Al-Hajib’s systematic approach and demonstrates the intricate connection between semantics and syntax in Arabic grammar.
