Challenges and Psychological Effects of COVID-19 on Moroccan Speech Therapists

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted social, economic, and professional dynamics on a global scale. This health crisis has profoundly impacted various aspects of human life, particularly mental health. Healthcare professionals, including speech therapists, have been especially affected, facing unprecedented challenges in their professional practices. This article explores the influence of the pandemic on speech therapists, focusing on the psychological impacts and the adaptations required to sustain their mission. The central question arises: how did speech therapists manage the demands of their profession and the health constraints during the COVID-19 pandemic while coping with psychological impacts and maintaining the quality of care? A descriptive quantitative study was conducted with 60 speech therapists in Morocco to address this question. Data were collected through questionnaires that explored their professional and personal experiences during the pandemic. The findings of this study reveal that the pandemic caused high levels of anxiety, stress, and a sense of helplessness among speech therapists. Most participants reported increased physical and mental fatigue, which negatively affected their ability to work. Furthermore, adjustments such as changes in working hours and the adoption of tele-speech therapy were implemented. The COVID-19 pandemic posed considerable challenges for speech therapists, impacting their psychological well-being and professional practices. Recognizing these effects is essential to developing appropriate support strategies to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of speech therapy care.
