The Role of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Treating Chronic Pain: A Migraine Case Study

Over recent decades, psychological treatments have evolved significantly through theoretical and empirical advances addressing psychological, psychosomatic, and physical disorders such as chronic pain and headaches. Within this framework, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has emerged as one of the most effective psychotherapeutic approaches, demonstrating substantial efficacy in managing chronic conditions, including migraines. This study aims to examine the role of CBT in alleviating chronic pain by reviewing and analyzing findings from experimental and clinical research. A descriptive-analytical approach was adopted to synthesize results demonstrating that CBT helps modify dysfunctional thoughts and beliefs associated with pain perception, thereby enhancing emotional regulation, psychological resilience, and pain management. The findings highlight CBT’s capacity to improve both psychological and physiological adaptation among patients suffering from chronic pain. The study underscores the importance of integrating psychological interventions, such as CBT, into multidisciplinary healthcare models in Morocco to ensure more comprehensive and effective treatment of psychosomatic disorders. Ultimately, this research advocates for a biopsychosocial understanding of pain that bridges psychological and physical dimensions within clinical practice.
