The Poetics of Water in the Mu‘allaqat:An Analytical and Interpretive Study of Self, Space, and Other through Symbolism
Water emerges as a central motif in the poetry of the Mu‘allaqat, the renowned collection of pre-Islamic “gilded poems,” serving as a vital lens through which to explore the cultural and existential dimensions of life in the Arabian Peninsula. The vivid water imagery found within these poems reflects not only the harsh and shifting desert environment but also the deeper philosophical concerns of the pre-Islamic poets. Through these diverse portrayals of water, the poems reveal complex relationships between the self, the natural environment, and the social world—relationships marked by longing, pride, contemplation, and the quest for identity. This study investigates the symbolic role of water in the Mu‘allaqat, examining how these poetic “water scenes” articulate the tensions and harmonies between the individual and their surroundings, as well as between the self and others. Water, in this context, acts as a metaphorical gateway to understanding the multifaceted conflicts and desires that shape human existence in this era. Employing an analytical and interpretive methodology, this research is structured into two main sections, each comprising several focused subtopics. It aims to illuminate the nuanced ways in which water imagery enriches the Mu‘allaqat’s thematic and aesthetic complexity, underscoring its enduring relevance for appreciating pre-Islamic literary and cultural identity.
