The Ottoman Empire: From Rise to Fall The Janissary Corps’ Role in Shaping its Destiny
The present research seeks to examine a pivotal historical issue: the decisive role of the Janissary corps in shaping the dynamics of power, strength, and decline within the Ottoman Empire from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. In its formative stages, the Janissary army constituted the principal pillar of the Ottoman military system, serving as a fundamental instrument for the empire’s territorial expansion, administrative consolidation, and the projection of its prestige both domestically and abroad. Over time, however, this elite military institution underwent a profound transformation, gradually evolving into a source of weakness, disorder, and political disintegration. This shift occurred as the Janissaries developed into an insular political and social entity, prioritizing their corporate privileges and material interests over the broader welfare of the state. Rather than adhering to their original martial and administrative functions, they increasingly intervened in the political arena, influencing the succession of sultans, obstructing reform initiatives, and resisting modernization across multiple spheres of governance. Consequently, this study investigates the historical process through which the Janissary corps transitioned from a constructive and empowering force into a destabilizing and obstructive one, thereby becoming a central factor in the empire’s stagnation and eventual decline. To elucidate this complex historical paradox—encapsulated in the study’s central thesis—the research adopts a rigorous historical methodology grounded in critical and comparative analysis. This approach enables the identification of the principal variables affecting the Janissary institution and its transformation over time, drawing upon an extensive corpus of primary and secondary sources focused on Ottoman history in general and the Janissary phenomenon in particular.
