The Manufacturing of Fear and the Justification of Exclusion: The Far Right and the Migration Crisis in the Euro-Mediterranean Space
This article examines the complex relationship between migration flows and the rise of far-right narratives of violence in the Euro-Mediterranean space, with particular attention to the role of crises and social tensions in strengthening their appeal. Drawing on Johan Galtung’s typology of violence (direct, structural, and cultural), securitization theory from the Copenhagen School, and political mobilization theory, the study explains how migration and its compounded crises are reframed as social threats that legitimize exclusionary practices and violence. It further shows how security discourse is transformed into an existential narrative tied to identity and destiny, which is then instrumentalized for political mobilization and cross-border organized violence. Methodologically, the study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach that integrates political sociology, migration studies, and the sociology of violence. The analysis relies on official documents, Europol reports, political speeches, far-right movement statements, and case studies from Greece. More than fifteen far-right movements across eleven countries are examined, with a focus on discursive structures, coordination networks, and violent practices. The findings reveal that targeting socioeconomically marginalized groups contributes to the normalization of violence, while social media and the dark web play a central role in transnational mobilization. The study concludes that the “fragility of the Mediterranean border” reflects accumulated crises that are politically exploited to justify violence against migrants, highlighting the need for deeper empirical research, particularly concerning vulnerable youth exposed to fear-based radicalization
