Straussian Grounded Theory: A Comprehensive Review

Grounded theory methodology and methods are widely accepted as effective procedures for conducting qualitative research with the primary aim of developing theory. This paper examines two major grounded theory approaches, Glaserian and Straussian, exploring their foundational principles, key differences, and implications for novice researchers. By using a narrative literature review methodology, the study synthesizes and interprets existing research, foundational books, and scholarly articles. The findings highlight significant methodological differences, particularly in literature review practices and coding procedures. While Glaserian grounded theory emphasizes emergent coding and minimal preconceptions, Straussian grounded theory follows a structured coding framework consisting of open, axial, and selective coding. This paper suggests that novice scholars and researchers can benefit from the systematic approach of Straussian grounded theory, as it is specifically designed for them.
