Space and Socialization:A Sociological Approach to the “Houma” in the Moroccan City

The Studies in urban sociology have demonstrated the significant and influential role that traditional cities played in shaping the social identity of their residents, as well as how they continue to impact various behaviors and social and cultural relationships. This influence affects both individual and collective behaviors within the traditional city. Furthermore, the customs and attitudes of residents often resemble one another, primarily due to the nature of communal life in urban and popular areas known as “Al-Houma” (neighborhood). This suburban area formed the foundational framework upon which the social, cultural, and economic interactions specific to its residents were built. At the same time, it acted as an intermediary element, facilitating and consolidating the socialization of its inhabitants. Thus, this entity represented a secure urban fabric through which social and spatial practices contributed to building and strengthening the urban integration of its residents.

Given this, to what extent has this entity been able to maintain its function after the emergence of the modern city? And was it able to develop defensive mechanisms against the economic, urban, and cultural transformations brought about by the rise of the modern city?
