Linguistic Economy and Inference of Riffian Idiomatic Expressions: A case Study of the Ait Ouriaghel Dialect

This contribution aims to analyze the use of idiomatic expressions by speakers within the Rif community in their daily discourse, emphasizing their correlation with practical aspects, particularly regarding the economic utilization of language. We will deploy an in-depth contextual analysis to determine the diverse elements that influence the meaning of idiomatic expressions.
This study specifically focuses on delineating the inferential aspect of Riffian idiomatic units, specifically emphasizing the language of the Ait Ouriaghel. This approach relies on the exploration of a corpus of widely used expressions within this community, shedding light on the use of fixed expressions within the framework of speech acts inherent to the community’s daily life and social interactions.
To bring this idea home, we will a) study how the Rif community applies the principle of linguistic economy in the use of idiomatic expressions, and b) examine the semantic implications of this usage on the inference of meanings. It is crucial to capture these nuances as this will permit us to meticulously unravel the idiomatic dynamics of Riffian expressions, and their linguistic inference, without losing sight of the prerequisite to underscore the principle of linguistic economy concerning semantic implicatures within the Rif community.
