Architectural Space as a Canvas for Artistic Creations: The Case of Artistic Groups in Tunisia
The objective of this study is to analyze the transformations in contemporary artistic creation through the integration of urban space as a site of production, meaning, and engagement. Contemporary artists no longer perceive the street as a mere functional support, but as a conceptual space imbued with aesthetic, social, and political dimensions. To explore this dynamic, the analysis is based on a historical-critical approach, tracing the evolution of artistic practices since the late 20th century. It examines various movements and forms of expression — such as street art, performances, and site-specific sculptures — that link artistic gestures to architectural and urban space, regarded simultaneously as a medium, material, and context for creation. The study thus reveals that urban space has become a genuine field of artistic experimentation, rich in meaning and intention. Far from being a passive backdrop, it acts as an agent in the creative process, engaging artists in a dialogue with the public, the memory of places, and contemporary social issues. This shift has fostered the emergence and proliferation of innovative visual practices, such as murals, immersive installations, and critical interventions, which today are redefining the role of art in public space.
