Memory and Imagination in Drama: Reclaiming Lost Identity and Transcending Alienation
Creativity is an intrinsic human impulse through which the artist seeks to transcend the struggles of existence, the constraints of space and time, and the erosion of being. In this pursuit, the imagination becomes a gateway to expansive worlds where freedom is not merely desired but essential. Theater, as a performative and reflective art form, serves as a powerful space where memory and imagination converge, reviving lived experiences, historical fragments, and cultural legacies. In this fusion of fantasy and reality, the stage becomes a site where the richness of the past, the complexity of the present, and the uncertainty of the future coalesce into a unified dramatic expression. This study explores how theatrical creation becomes a means of resisting alienation and restoring lost identity. Memory, in this context, elevates the human condition, rescuing it from oblivion, marginalization, and the falsification of truth. Through the lens of imagination, the theater reconstructs a thinking, liberated self—conscious of its heritage and capable of breaking free from imposed constraints. The performance examined here unveils hidden emotional landscapes and suppressed narratives, articulating the tragedy of the human soul in an age of existential uncertainty. Ultimately, theatrical imagination becomes a dynamic force that transcends spatial and temporal limits, revealing both the light and shadow of the human psyche. This paper asks: to what extent can memory and imagination in theater serve as tools for rebuilding cultural identity and challenging the illusions of contemporary life?
