Geographical Mobility of Teaching Competencies in Tunisian Universities: Causes and Effects – A Field Study

This study explores the growing migration of university professors from Tunisian universities and the impact this movement has on the country’s higher education system. Through a combination of literature review, questionnaire-based research, and interviews with university professors, the study seeks to understand why so many teaching competencies are leaving and what this means for the future of Tunisian academia. The findings reveal that financial challenges—particularly low salaries and the resulting decline in purchasing power—are among the most pressing reasons driving professors abroad. Many feel unablebto maintain a social and professional standing that reflects their academic qualifications and cultural capital. Beyond financial issues, a lack of academic freedom and limited research support have further discouraged professors, while host countries offer more supportive and resource-rich environments. Together, these factors have turned Tunisian universities into spaces that often push talent away rather than nurture it, raising serious questions about their ability to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development and national progress.
