Impact of Social Media Use on Self-Esteem and Emotion Regulation among Moroccan Youth
Social media occupies a central role in the lives of young people, influencing their psychological and emotional well-being. This study investigates the impact of daily social media use on self-esteem and emotion regulation among Moroccan youth, taking into account sociodemographic and family variables. The sample consisted of 200 participants aged 18 to 25 years (108 females, 92 males) recruited through convenience sampling using an online questionnaire distributed via Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. Self-esteem was assessed with the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and emotion regulation was measured using the Emotional Competence Scale (Brasseur et al., 2013), both administered in French and Arabic. Descriptive and inferential analyses (Student’s t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson correlations) were conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics. The results showed slightly lower self-esteem than the theoretical mean (M = 30.49) and higher-than-expected emotion regulation (M = 33.56). Significant differences were observed across certain sociodemographic variables, and a moderate positive correlation was found between selfesteem and emotion regulation (r = 0.342; p < 0.01). Frequency of social media use was not associated with either variable. These findings emphasize the importance of considering individual and family factors to understand the influence of social media on youths’ psychological well-being. They also highlight the relevance of awareness programs and preventive interventions targeting problematic use, as well as the need for future studies to clarify the underlying mechanisms.
