This study explores the sociological implications of adopting solar-powered drip irrigation systems for cannabis cultivation in the rural region of Taounate, Morocco. With the enactment of Law No. 21-13 legalizing cannabis farming—particularly varieties that require consistent irrigation—farmers have increasingly turned to modern water-saving technologies to confront growing challenges of water scarcity. These challenges are exacerbated by climate change and unsustainable water management practices. The research focuses on the evolving social dynamics among farmers and other stakeholders in response to this technological shift, treating social interaction as a dependent variable shaped by the independent variable of modern irrigation practices. Given the limited sociological literature on this intersection between agricultural innovation and cannabis cultivation in the region, the study fills a notable gap. A descriptive, analytical, and comparative methodology combined with field observation and interviews to examine how farmers engage with this new irrigation model. It also contrasts the declining use of traditional irrigation methods with the expanding adoption of drip irrigation, highlighting how market integration and agricultural modernization are reshaping local farming practices. Ultimately, this study aims to deepen our understanding of the socio-economic transformations driven by the legalization and technical modernization of cannabis cultivation in Moroccan rural society.
