The Impact of Cannabis Dependency on Executive Functions and Their Link to School Dropout Among Adolescents

Cannabis dependency among adolescents is a growing concern with significant effects on cognitive functions, especially executive functions, which are vital for academic success and behavioral regulation. This study investigates the relationship between cannabis dependence, executive functions, and school dropout among adolescents in Fès, Morocco. With increasing cannabis use among Moroccan teenagers, the research focuses on how cannabis affects cognitive abilities like planning, decision-making, and mental flexibility.

The study involves 60 adolescents aged 16 to 21, divided into cannabis-dependent and non-dependent groups. Using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), the results show that cannabis-dependent adolescents performed worse on executive function tasks and had higher absenteeism rates, reflecting a lack of motivation to attend school.

This research underscores the negative impact of cannabis dependency on academic performance and highlights the need for early intervention. Strengthening executive functions through targeted programs could help prevent school dropout and address the long-term social and educational challenges faced by cannabis-dependent adolescents.
